Closing out October, finally, with a bird I’ve likely seen a dozen times,
but not closely enough to identify by either eye or photo—making this bad
boy a double life lister! It’s a rough-legged hawk, identified in its light
phase by its pale head and throat, dark belly, light legs, band-tipped tail,
and distinctive dark markings on the underside of the wings. They’re easy
to miss, being very similar in both size and shape to the more-noticed
redtail.
