The conference closed at noon, which allowed me to get home in time for the
brightest of the afternoon light. This is a typical flight pose for birds
trying to gather speed; this is a starling but the ospreys, blackbirds,
redtails, and kestrels all do this too, tucking in their wings and holding
them as steady as they can. And these little birds can really haul
tailfeathers—I’ve gotten pics out the truck windows of house finches, even
smaller than this guy, pacing us at 28 mph without any kind of high-speed
tricks!
