While the kestrels did not stop circling and using the distress call
normally reserved for an attack on their nest, they weren’t the only birds
upset by the downing of the cottonwoods. There are ten crows in that tree,
with an eleventh out of frame, and they fussed and cussed, sending out
circling scouts every few minutes, for quite a while before cruising over to
the high school to raise hell on the football field. The local crows liked
the vantage point the two cut trees provided, and for reasons I’d guess have
to do with lush grass growth attracting snack-size bugs, they **really**
like the high school’s athletic fields. I’ve seen as many as fifty or sixty
crows down there foraging, though never in good light and when there wasn’t
anyone behind us so we could slow or stop the truck.
