This semi-formal-clad member of the Corvidae (crows, jays, magpies) is a
photo life list first for me, I’m pretty sure; I might’ve gotten one last
year up at Crystal Park but I believe that turned out to be its cousin the
gray jay instead. Clark’s nutcracker makes an excellent example of the vast
swath of memorials to Lewis & Clark’s great expedition found here in the
northwestern states—we have a lot of Lewis’s this and Clark’s that around!
The nutcracker is also a signature regional bird, most prevalent in high
altitude Rocky Mountain forests in CO, MT, ID, WY, and on up into Canada.
